![]() ![]() But a lack of independent thought marks her narrative of the family life created in the US by her Catholic immigrant parents – an academic and a doctor from Belgium and Belarus, respectively – along with her parroting of their tales of suffering endured by European relatives during World War II, all without wonder at their conclusions. Not that Sankovitch isn’t bright she earned her J.D. Every tome that she picks up is exhaustively detailed, along with any similarity that its heroine bears to her idealized late sister, Anne-Marie. ![]() ![]() Trained as an attorney, Sankovitch, 48, does her due diligence in this stolid recapping of the 12 months that she spent reading a book a day, as a salve for losing an adored sibling to cancer several years before. The book owes its subtitle to acclaimed journalist and novelist Joan Didion’s own 2005 account of exquisite grief at the deaths of both her husband and daughter, in “The Year of Magical Thinking." But Sankovitch boasts none of Didion’s brilliance – at least, not as an author. This may be the key to the profound limitations of Nina Sankovitch’s Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading, an amateur memoir of loss pegged to her eldest sister’s death. An avid reader isn’t necessarily a deep writer. ![]()

Whispers by Lauren Klever6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() I do plan to revisit the children’s book I began back in 2003 and the fantasy novel I started back in 1990 when I was a student at Oregon State. I started a number of books over the years, yet nothing took hold of me like The Secret Watchers. I’ve been passionate about reading my whole life, but my professional writing is a more recent adventure. I’m a graduate of both Oregon State University and Portland State University from where I have Masters degrees in education: One for secondary science and the other for elementary education. ![]() I’m an only child (read as huge imagination) and spent my childhood in Milwaukie, Oregon. ![]() It is no simple job and is further complicated by the dark watchers who try to neutralize him, in any way they can. Very early in book one, Owen discovers he has ability to see darkness in the world and is now driven to repair what he can while trying to balance his own moral compass. ![]() My series The Secret Watchers is a contemporary action-packed fantasy with a fourteen year old male protagonist. I also love to read young adult literature because I’m a big kid at heart. I’m a certified teacher who is dual endorsed for grades 5-9 so YA was a natural fit for me. Hey, I’m Lauren Klever, author of young adult fantasy action adventures. ![]()

![]() She would become his co-star a year later in High Noon. Gary Cooper visited the set and was taken by her unusual beauty. Her performance was not memorable and did not attract further movie offers, but one good thing came of it. Grace Kelly’s first film appearance saw her listed tenth in the cast of Fourteen Hours in 1951. I have disregarded several ‘rumoured’ involvements and have endeavoured to focus on those which are quite well documented. With regard to her alleged romances I have taken a brief look at each of the eleven pictures she made prior to marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco in April 1956. ![]() She had scant regard for the sanctity of marriage, neither her own nor anyone else’s. I imagine the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Her supporters argue that she was basically seeking a father substitute to compensate for her own father’s aloofness, that she was neither promiscuous in the true sense, nor was she a nymphomaniac as some claim. By most accounts she made hay with most of her leading men while the sun shone. ![]() The stunning American actress Grace Kelly only made eleven movies in her brief but spectacular career. ![]()
