Orange there there6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps because of this lack, “There There” overflows with narrative threads. In short, as Tommy Orange notes with exasperation and fury and grim humor in his exceptional debut novel “There There,” there’s a pronounced dearth of imagination when it comes to telling stories about native people who are very much alive. Or they’re all about the destruction of that ideal, the tragic sidelining of a defeated race. Liz Hafalia/The Chronicle Show More Show Lessīeyond outmoded tales about cowboys and manifest destiny, most of the stories we tell about American Indians are misty romances of a bygone people living in harmony with the land. Sea Hearts by Margo Lanagan6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From Daniel, a young boy who fears the crazy, scary witch who sits on the beach weaving blankets of seaweed, to Misskaella’s own point of view as a child growing up into a young woman. We get to see Misskaella from multiple perspectives. Lanagan’s Sea Hearts is a wonderful novel about a town that scorns a magical girl who ends up teaching them all a lesson they’ll never forget. As part of my current writing challenge, this one filled the category of a body of water included in the book title, and I eagerly got stuck into it on my walks to and from work. Sea Hearts is a shortlisted book for the Children’s Book Council of Australua and even though it’s categorised as Young Adult, it will appeal to adult readers as well. I picked up my signed copy at her book launch for Zeroes (co-authored with Scott Westerfeld and Deborah Biancotti) ages ago and vaguely remembered someone telling me to pay attention to the names at the start of each section. Sea Hearts by Margo Lanaghan has been on my list for a while. ![]()

A murder is announced characters6/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Christie’s Miss Marple mysteries are ones in which female news and knowledge are vindicated, throwing a smiling side eye at mansplanations and male authorities. ![]() Most men don’t, but the twinkling irony with which Miss Marple nudges blustering, blowhard cops in the right direction demonstrates how the Queen of Crime inherited just as much from Jane Austen as Arthur Conan Doyle, employing the sly humor that is a hallmark of British domestic fiction. She said that Miss Marple and Poirot never solved a mystery together because “Poirot, a complete egoist, would not like being taught his business or having suggestions made to him by an elderly spinster lady.” It must have been a relief for Christie, in novels starting with The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930, to write about Miss Marple, her little old lady heroine, whose quiet expertise in the comings and goings of village life and the universality of human nature made her an unlikely master detective. She had grown to despise her most famous detective, Hercule Poirot, whom she described as “an egocentric creep.” But her readers had loved the high maintenance Poirot since his first appearance in 1920 - his perfectly groomed moustache, his patent leather shoes, his delicate stomach - so much that he was the only fictional character ever to receive an obituary in the New York Times. Jack weyland charly6/21/2023 ![]() Uncertain about themselves and their bodies, pressured to be thin, and experimenting sexually, such girls struggle as they mature into adulthood. ![]() Brumberg ? and the initial post ? focuses on young women as the most vulnerable segment of the American female population. How did Mormon garments with their emphasis upon modesty and purity change the way that women thought about their menstrual cycles, their breasts, and other intimate aspects of their bodies? Did Mormon theology and its emphasis upon the divinity of the body allow Mormon women to develop more positive ideas about their body? And, finally, how did Mormon institutions like Young Women?s and Relief Society help girls manage the transition from childhood to adolescence? These questions were inspired by Joan Jacobs Brumberg?s The Body Project, which attempts a similar history for American women as a whole. ![]() A few months ago, in a post called The Mormon Body Project, I asked what a history of Mormon women and their relationship to their bodies would be like. ![]()
